WHY I LOVE IT
Bilson gave her feminine blouse a masculine spin with an oversize suit jacket. Try pairing a lace top with a menswear-inspired blazer for a similar look.
A professorial fabric takes on high-fashion appeal when woven in a luxurious fiber, like that of JoAnna Garcia's feathered sheath from the Gossip Girl-inspired Anna Sui for Target collection (left). Both Kate Hudson (center) and Debra Messing (right) chose sexy Michael Kors designs
Rachel McAdams got avant-garde in a versatile woven bandage skirt (left), while Gabrielle Union (center) skipped the straight and narrow in an abstract brush-striped dress. Milla Jovovich (right) wore a soft, feminine take on the look from Donna Karan.
Ciara's take on the peek-a-boo dress (left) was ultra-modern — and unexpected! — in deep cerulean, while Mary J. Blige added splash to slim trousers with a tie-front satin top in deep blue (center). Blake Lively (right) contrasted her vibrant Victoria Beckham Collection sheath with magenta jew
Michelle Trachtenberg took a walk on the wild side in a classic DvF wrap dress (left), while reality star Kim Kardashian wore an '80s take on the trend in bright neon pink (center). Emmanuelle Chriqui (right) went classic for her front-row appearance in a tawny-hued pattern.
Kristin Cavallari went mod in a gleaming Alice + Olivia tunic worn with black tights and accessories (left), while Shenae Grimes (center) dressed down a Matthew Williamson sequined jacket and satin Etro top with Genetic jeans. Nicky Hilton (right) added black basics to her sparkling tank, also from Alice + Olivia.
British songbird Estelle paired a high-waist skin skirt with a tailored blazer (left), while Ugly Betty's Becki Newton toughened up her minidress with a zippered motorcycle jacket (center). Molly Sims (right) had a cool-girl take on after-dark glam with her draped leather jacket and liquid silv
Recently, celebrities are drawing inspiration from many eras including the turn of the century, the twenties, forties, sixties and seventies. While a retro hairstyle can be a refreshing change now and then, it presents pitfalls that even stars need to avoid.

A Marilyn Monroe-esque style could work for a star like Barrymore.
The Best: Ellen Pompeo
Your mantra should be: never look like you tried too hard. Ellen Pompeo pulls off Depression-era finger waves beautifully while keeping her look tasteful and touchable. Letting the style speak for itself and downplaying accessories, makeup, etc. is a great choice. This was a great week in hair for Ellen and other celebrities.
The Worst: Ellen Pompeo
Did we mention that you should never look like you tried too hard? Ms. Pompeo's fifties style suffers from a case of over-teasing, over-doing it and just plain going overboard. As a general rule, if you could successfully hide a hamster in your hair, you've gone too far.
The Best: Dita Von Teese
Behold the Queen of Retro. Von Teese has made her fortune as a virtuoso in vintage goodness. While she may do more than hint at the past with her look, she knows what looks good on her and sticks with it. The secret is to create a retro look the way it should have been, not the way it really was. This was a great week in hair for Dita and other celebrities.
The Worst: Dita Von Teese
Proof that anyone, even the Queen of Retro, can goof it up. That's how treacherous the retro path can be. Retro styles threaten to age the wearer and look matronly rather than glamorous. It's always better to dial back and modernize a bit. This look is more Mrs. Cleaver than Betty Page

The ex-fiance of Kandi Burruss -- who stars on "Real Housewives of Atlanta" -- died Friday night after a brawl erupted at a club in Atlanta.
Polilce say Ashley "A.J." Jewell suffered severe head injuries during a fight at the night club Body Tap, was rushed to Piedmont Hospital, and later died, according to myfoxatlanta.com.
As of Saturday morning police had no suspects in custody, but there is a person of interest.
Another report says the fight erupted in a parking lot and that Kandi is "stunned and speechless" at the news of his death.
Kandi is a new 'Housewife' in the season 2 of the show, now airing on Bravo. On the show, filmed months ago, she and A.J. are happily engaged and seen planning a wedding, despite her mother's objections to A.J. having children by multiple women.
Kandi, a single mother of one, has never been married. She is a Grammy-winner now working on launching a solo career.
It is unclear when the two split up.
